The Smithers Golf and Country Club was started in the early 1930s and gradually expanded to 18 holes in the early 1980s. Over the years, the hard work of its active membership and volunteers has resulted in a course that has achieved its current status as one of the best courses in Northwest British Columbia.
The course boasts one of the largest junior golfer memberships in the province. Throughout its history the club has encouraged family participation by keeping membership costs to a minimum. Low rates for junior and senior golfers has kept this recreation within reach of most members of the community.
The club sponsors a number of tournaments throughout the season, starting with the Spring Classic on the May long weekend with both men's and ladies' events. July sees the club hosting a Seniors', a Juniors' and Mr. and Mrs. tournament. The ladies host the Ladies' Northern Open in August and the men host the Men's Northern Open on the Labour Day weekend (3 days). The latter has seen in excess of 240 golfers participating.
