Norman Kilpatrick Memorial Tournament
The Norman Kilpatrick Memorial Tournament has been held since 1969, in honour of its namesake, who passed away December 27, 1968. Norm was one of, if not the first Secretary Treasurer of the SGCC, and served in that capacity for 35 years. After retiring as Postmaster in 1964, he took on the responsibility of collectiing club dues at the old clubhouse, which in those days was located behind the 9th green. Norm, along with his wife, Jean, was a lifetime member. Unfortunately, due to his struggle with severe arthritis, his playing days were brought to a premature end in the late 1950's. His is a legacy upon which the Smithers Golf & Country Club was founded, and it lives on in the annual participation of his tournament.
It is the tradition of the Norman Kilpatrick Memorial that the trophy be awarded by a member of the family, and that tradition continues to this day. It was first presented by his wife, Jean, until her passing in March of 1997; then by his son, Bill Kilpatrick, himself a longtime member, until his passing. Currently, his youngest daughter, Jean Maskiewich, alongside her son, Bill Maskiewich, himself a long standing member and former Club President, do their part in presenting the trophy to the winner.
We do well in honouring the past, and those who played a significant role in our history. And our story lives on, with generations of new members, as they play themselves into the rich tradition of the Smithers Golf & Country Club.
Thank you to all those who take part!
